Cleaning For Meaning

Lewisville, Texas resident Debbie Sardone wanted to make life a little easier for women undergoing cancer treatment, so she founded Cleaning for a Reason, a national nonprofit that arranges up to four, free professional house cleanings a year. Giving the gift of a clean house may sound like a small thing, but women suffering from cancer, who are often exhausted by the treatment, are truly grateful for the service.

Cleaning for a Reason relies on 975 partners across the U.S. and Canada to volunteer their services. And Brooklyn is doing its part. Denise Bogan has always wanted to help other women, and by offering the services of her Coney Island company, Denton Cleaning, she can. “Being a mother and a working woman is tough enough,” said Bogan. “Offering to help women who are facing chemotherapy or radiation treatment is just the right thing to do.”

Melinda Grant of Brite Touch Cleaning Service in Crown Heights was also quick to volunteer the services of her company and she eagerly awaits her first appointment. Clean Green Maid in Greenpoint is another Brooklyn cleaning service that volunteered to partner with Cleaning for a Reason.

Signing up is easy. Those seeking the service fill out an application on the Cleaning for a Reason website and submit proof of treatment from a physician. Cleaning for a Reason then arranges for a cleaning service in your area to contact you.

For more information, visit the Cleaning for a Reason website at www.cleaningforareason.org.

A clean house is not a luxury it is a necessity

Keeping a clean home saves money. When things are cleaned regularly they last longer. Dirt should not be given a chance to build up. Ground-in dirt must be scrubbed, therefore, creating more wear. Your home and belongings are a large investment.

Cleanliness saves time in many ways.

Everyone deserves a little help sometime.

Cleaning promotes healthy living. A dirty home can make you sick. Dust, allergens and food-borne poisoning. Special attention must be paid to sinks, faucets, doorknobs, cutting boards, refrigerator handle, and toilets.

Most people are too busy to keep their home as they would like it to be. Having visitors is usually the motivator to clean. A clean home looks good and makes you feel better about yourself.

Professional cleaners do it quicker (up to half the time it would take you) and more efficiently.

With a cleaning company you can discuss with management any concerns you may have such as change of schedule, cancellations and how the cleaner fits in with your personal situation. No need to worry about hurt feelings; all changes are handled professionally and discreetly.

The service and convenience frees up time to do business, spend time with family, friends and enjoy life. Simply put, be with the people who matter most doing the things that matter most.

Ponder this:

There are 24 hours in a day

168 hours in a week

(10) average prep time AM/PM

(40) hours working if you’re lucky

(10) hours traveling to and from work

(56) hours sleeping at 8 hrs. per day

(14) average dinner prep and clean-up

That leaves 5.43 hours to do everything ELSE on your to do list.

Peace of Mind

Keep a container of disposable wipes or a cloth handy for quick bathroom touch-ups of the sink and toilet.

Cleaning kit. If you have multiple levels at your place of residence it’s a good idea to have cleaning basics available (can be kept under the sink in the vanity). For example a toilet bowl cleaner, multi-purpose disinfectant, wipes and a small container for rinsing the tub (if you do not have a removable shower head). I keep a spray bottle of vinegar which kills 99 % of bacteria.

Dishwasher Empty as soon as the load is clean. Otherwise the dirty dishes end up in the sink which creates an extra job and clean up time before next meal prep.

Multi sheet lint roller. Can be used not only to take lint/hair off of your clothing it’s perfect for furniture and can be rolled over your pet to take off loose hair

Multi-task while talking on the phone. The quieter chores for example are appropriate such as loading/unloading washer/dryer, folding clothes, dusting, cleaning out your purse or briefcase, looking in the refrigerator and discarding items that you will not eat or are past the “use by” date, sorting through junk mail, “swiffer” the floor. For the seasoned talker these noisier tasks can be done but only with friends and/or family who love you unconditionally, you can load/unload the dishwasher, clean up the kitchen, and do general tidying.

Find items to donate. As part of your day if you come across an article of clothing or any other item you no longer need or want put it in a donate bag or basket

Best household cleaning tip I have ever heard, “find someone else to do it.”

Most of all enjoy your space. We do not live in museums. What makes each space special is how you make it a home. Having a clean, organized home creates a sense of well being. Feelings of well being promote good health – mentally and physically.

A few of my favorite things: Twist Loofah Sponge, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day, Swiffer, Magic Eraser, Vinegar, Natural Furniture Polish, Citrus Magic Air Freshener, Clorox Green Works
